🤝CENTRAL FLORIDA FOUNDATION INVESTS OVER $1.5 MILLION IN LOCAL NONPROFITS ADMIST COVID-19
Philanthropy mobilizes dollars to support nonprofit operations and innovation
Central Florida Foundation, the region’s community foundation, today announces over $1.5 million of investments in nonprofit operations and innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The investments span an array of community areas including mental health, the elderly, animals, healthcare, hunger and homelessness. These investments are designed to support operations as many nonprofits have seen troubling increases to the demand for their services.
The community areas and investments include:
- Over $40,000 for mental healthcare
- $70,000 for the elderly
- $15,000 for the care of animals
- $25,000 for healthcare
- Over $62,000 for homelessness service providers
- Over $1.35 million in grants from fundholders at the Foundation for an array of COVID-19 related challenges
Up to $1.2 million of the investments from fundholders at CFF has been made to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. With the nonprofit experiencing a 100% increase in demand since March, the investment supports operations and new delivery systems to distribute more food than ever to struggling community members. These new systems not only change the way Second Harvest operates now, but also into the future.
Like Second Harvest, many nonprofits are pivoting their business models to serve more residents in brand new ways.
“COVID-19 forces all nonprofits to rethink the way they serve their communities,” said Mark Brewer, president/CEO at Central Florida Foundation. “To make it to the other side, every nonprofit has to create a new normal.”
The Foundation has also made a $25,000 investment in the ALICE Fund at the Heart of Florida United Way to help provide immediate relief for individuals and families experiencing economic hardship as a result of job loss.
Generous fundholders and already established endowment funds at the Foundations make these investments in the community possible.

💉The Orlando VA Medical Center (OVAMC) has partnered with One Blood to host a public Blood Drive on May 13, 2020 by appointment only from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the SimLEARN, 13800 Veterans Way, Orlando Florida 32827. 👩🏽🏫To thank teachers for their dedication, Addition Financial has donated gift baskets to four local school districts for Teacher Appreciation Week.
Founded by Orange County teachers in 1937, Addition Financial has a longstanding tradition of supporting education in Central Florida. As schools have transitioned to distance learning, the credit union wanted to recognize teachers and thank them for their work both in the classroom and virtually. To do so, Addition Financial donated care baskets with gift cards to the school districts in Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Lake counties.
Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 4 to May 8. Each day, the districts will randomly select one lucky teacher to receive the care basket, sharing the winners on their social media pages.

🚢Neighbors in Laureate Park, Lake Nona had boatloads of fun for a good cause: a Social Distancing BATTLESHIP Tournament that benefitted Emergency Room staff at the Lake Nona VA hospital.
On Saturday, April 25 from 12pm-2pm, teams of neighbors played each other in the board game BATTLESHIP for a chance to compete in the top two spots on a life-size Battleship game later in the day. Players contributed $10 to participate, and all monies collected were used to buy lunch for the ER doctors, nurses, and staff that are “battling the frontlines” at the hospital. A total of $400 was raised!
🍔Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida: Second Harvest has been doubling its daily distribution to help thousands of people in need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 23, the nonprofit has been working to serve 300,000 meals a day. And they’re continuing to receive corporate support to fund hunger relief efforts!
Second Harvest received a $100,000 donation from ConcordRENTS! On top of the $100,000, the company is also committing to provide $10,000 a month for as long as needed to support Second Harvest’s response.
🚎Beep / Move Nona: Lake Nona Partners Deliver Lunch to Health Care Workers via Self-Driving Shuttle; Beep’s Move Nona self-driving shuttles were up and running again, but this time they weren’t picking up passengers. They were delivering pizzas!
An area known for innovation and collaboration, Lake Nona partners came together this week to donate lunch to health care workers on the front lines at the Orlando VA Medical Center. As part its on-going efforts to support first responders, local favorite Park Pizza & Brewing donated pizzas and teamed up with Beep, operator of the Lake Nona autonomous shuttle program, for a special delivery via self-driving shuttle to VA employees.
With operation temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus, the shuttles are finding new and innovative ways to support the community.To limit contact with the delivery, each pizza box was sealed, put onto a cart, loaded into the shuttle by Park Pizza & Brewing restaurant employees and then secured by the on-board shuttle attendant. Utilizing the autonomous shuttle ensures safe delivery of the food without having to rely on other services and allows workers to remain on campus.
The lunch delivery is the just one of the many ways the Lake Nona community has banned together to support those on the frontlines of the pandemic. Last week, OPD organized a “light up the night drive by salute” through Lake Nona’s Laureate Park neighborhood and Medical City including Nemours Children’s Hospital and the VA. Resident-driven initiatives have also included “Chalk Your Walk” covering community sidewalks with colorful words of encouragement and impressions of the “Nona Lisa,” to mask making brigades delivering hundreds of homemade masks to first responders.
Beep and other Lake Nona partners are exploring additional opportunities to utilize the autonomous shuttles to serve the community and support front-line workers during COVID-19.

⚽️ Nona Soccer Academy: Today, Nona Soccer comes to you to address something much bigger than the game of soccer - it is the societal obligation for us to pull together and help out the local community in need with survival items - like food, that we can give. It is an insane reality that this worldwide pandemic and challenge is right here at home in Central Florida.
We are working, hand in hand, with our friends at Rescue Orlando on a Food Drive, together with Second Harvest Food Bank, to help families right now during tough times. Monday - Thursday, from 10 - 3, the Nona Soccer Office (The Box) is open to receive donations for the COVID-19 Rescue Orlando Relief effort. This effort will give away FREE FOOD & Goods to families in need NOW, EVERY WEEKEND. They will pick up from us every Thursday afternoon. They don’t need money or gift cards as bulk items for sale are few and far between at the present time. With the demand we cannot just go to Sams and buy 100 pounds of rice.

🍗 Dickey’s Barbecue Pit: Dickey's BBQ and the Dickey family are showing support for those working on the frontlines during the COVID-19 crisis.
Guests can donate sandwiches to first responders in their communities with the new First Responder Relief Packs, which include bundles of five or 10 Pulled Pork Classic Sandwiches. In addition, the Dickey family has pledged to match every sandwich donated to double the efforts to feed first responders.
To participate, guests can go to dickeys.com and add First Responder Relief Packs to their order. If guests would like to donate more, they can add any number of individual sandwiches to their donation. Then Dickey’s, in partnership with The Dickey Foundation, will carry out the delivery on the guest’s behalf.

🍝Meals of Love:
While Central Floridians face another month challenged with uncertainty, there is one thing known for sure: Up to 1,000 fresh, restaurant-prepared meals will be safely delivered to the homes of seniors and disabled adults thanks to Meals of Love.
Meals of Love was created in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program – led by the Senior Resource Alliance – brings together agencies, restaurants and organizations in Central Florida to support the restaurant industry, while helping feed some of the most vulnerable populations in our community. The program is also creating new job opportunities for those in need with meal delivery roles.
Meals of Love is currently accepting applications for seniors and disabled adults who are interested in meal delivery and for restaurants that would like to prepare meals. You can visit mealsoflove.org to learn more.

-Needs donations to continue to help and serve families when they need RMH most.
- Will continue to monitor any changes with our hospital partners and
keep our families updated.

closed the dining rooms, allowing families to eat in their rooms.
- Staff continues to disinfect the houses and common areas multiple
times throughout the day.
But with all the challenges we are facing, we also want to share some good
news, like the De La Torre Family's story.
Baby April was diagnosed with Spina Bifida while her mother, Helen, was
pregnant. The family traveled from Miami to stay at our RMH at Arnold
Palmer Medical Center so Helen could have fetal surgery in December. She
then delivered Baby April in February. After a few months at our RMH, the
family was recently able to go home.

Last year, the event raised $400,000, which allowed Second Harvest to provide 1.6 million meals across Orange, Osceola, Lake, Seminole, Brevard and Volusia counties. Second Harvest hopes to meet – or exceed – that amount with so many neighbors feeling a direct impact of job cuts related to the Coronavirus pandemic. The need is the greatest it’s been since the Great Recession in 2008.
The virtual event will kick off on Monday, April 13 and end Saturday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m.
Virtual “attendees” will still have the chance to bid on items in the silent auction, and one lucky participant will win a dream closet of designer handbags, accessories, clothing, household goods and more, as part of the event’s signature “Key to the Closet” drawing.
